Abuakwa South Set for New Maternal Care Initiative

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, is set to launch a dedicated maternal healthcare support programme in November 2026 to assist pregnant women across the constituency.

The Kingsley Maternal Care initiative, according to the MP, will provide additional support to expectant mothers to help them access the care and assistance required for safe deliveries.

Dr Agyemang announced the initiative during the outdooring ceremony of Barimah Ofori Akari Opare Ahuntahunu II, the Kyebi Pano Chief, at the Kyebi Pano Presbyterian Basic School Park on September 28, 2026.

“It’s your time as a pregnant woman in Abuakwa South Constituency. I’m coming to support you massively to deliver safely. This is dubbed Kingsley Maternal Care,” he said.

The planned programme forms part of preparations for the broader Kingsley Health Cares Programme, which has involved engagements with the Abuakwa South Municipal Health Directorate. Apedwa is expected to host the launch, although details of the specific package of support and eligibility requirements are yet to be announced.

Building on healthcare interventions

The maternal-care programme comes against the backdrop of recent interventions by Dr Agyemang in the health sector.

In August, the MP donated medical equipment and consumables to the Kyebi Government Hospital after management identified specific equipment needs at the facility. The items included suction machines, electronic weighing scales, pulse oximeters, blood-pressure machines, thermometers, electronic patient monitors, wheelchairs, examination gloves and a cardiotocography (CTG) machine.

He also settled outstanding inpatient bills at the facility as part of the intervention.

The significance of support to the hospital was highlighted by its Medical Superintendent, Dr Isaac Antwi, who disclosed around the same period that the facility’s oxygen plant had been out of service for more than three years, forcing management to obtain oxygen cylinders from Koforidua for patients requiring oxygen support.

The inclusion of a CTG machine in the equipment package is particularly relevant to maternal and foetal monitoring, although the MP has not yet stated the extent to which the equipment donation will be integrated into the new maternal-care programme.

Education support remains another focus

Dr Agyemang’s planned maternal initiative also adds to a wider series of constituency-level interventions in education and human-capital development.

In March 2026, 418 tertiary students from all 24 electoral areas and 118 polling stations in Abuakwa South received financial assistance totalling GH¢808,939.13 for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The beneficiaries were enrolled in 74 tertiary institutions across the country, with the support covering tuition and other academic-related expenses.

The MP has also used the Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz and Kingsley Spelling Challenge to promote academic competition among pupils in the constituency, with particular emphasis on science, mathematics and literacy.

A longer-term outcome of the quiz initiative emerged in July when 20 former participants who had received scholarships to study medicine in Cuba graduated as medical doctors. They are expected to return to Ghana and contribute to the country’s health sector.

From education to healthcare

The combination of educational scholarships, tertiary fee support, hospital interventions and the planned maternal-care programme points to a constituency development approach centred on education, healthcare and human-capital support.

The maternal initiative, however, shifts the focus specifically to expectant mothers, an area where timely access to antenatal care, monitoring and other support can be critical to maternal and child health.

Further details on the number of beneficiaries, financial or medical assistance to be provided, the participating health facilities and the eligibility criteria are expected to be made public ahead of the November launch.

For now, Dr Agyemang says the objective is to provide pregnant women in Abuakwa South with additional support to improve their prospects of safe delivery.

The November rollout will therefore provide the first opportunity to assess the scope of Kingsley Maternal Care and how it will complement existing public maternal-health services within the constituency.
