A new partnership between the private sector and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) is set to ease accommodation challenges at Achimota Senior High School following the construction of a 250-bed dormitory facility valued at more than GH¢18.7 million.
The project, funded through a collaboration between Saka Homes Limited and GETFund, highlights growing efforts to leverage private sector participation in addressing infrastructure deficits within Ghana’s educational institutions.
Speaking at the presentation, Managing Director of Saka Homes, Mr. Ebenezer Kwadwo Saka Addi-Mensah, said the initiative forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility programme and reflects its commitment to supporting quality education in Ghana.
According to him, the project also represents a personal contribution to the development of his alma mater, Achimota School.
“This is an initiative that has been on my heart for a long time. Achimota School is my alma mater. Five years ago, I built a 48-bed ward and donated it to the school, and it has always been my desire to do something more for the institution,” he said.
The new dormitory is expected to significantly improve accommodation conditions for students while supporting efforts to expand access to quality secondary education.
Mr. Addi-Mensah commended GETFund for introducing a framework that encourages private companies to contribute to educational infrastructure development through tax relief incentives offered in collaboration with the Ghana Revenue Authority.
He described the arrangement as an innovative approach that creates opportunities for businesses to support national development while benefiting from incentives that encourage corporate social investment.
The Managing Director further urged other companies, philanthropists and corporate organisations to take advantage of the initiative and contribute towards closing the infrastructure gap within Ghana’s education sector.
GETFund officials believe the collaboration could serve as a model for future partnerships aimed at accelerating the delivery of educational facilities across the country.
Financial Controller of GETFund, Mr. Alexis K. Asuinura, praised Saka Homes for responding positively to the Fund’s call for private sector participation in educational development.
He expressed confidence that more organisations would join the initiative to help expand infrastructure in schools and other educational institutions nationwide.
Mr. Asuinura noted that participating companies are also given the opportunity to brand completed projects with their corporate identities, providing visibility while contributing to national development goals.
He reiterated GETFund’s commitment to its statutory mandate under Act 581, which requires the Fund to supplement government efforts in providing educational infrastructure and facilities at all levels of the education system.
Beyond infrastructure development, he highlighted the Fund’s longstanding contribution to human capital development through scholarship programmes that have supported thousands of deserving students since its establishment in 2000.
The Achimota dormitory project is expected to strengthen learning conditions, reduce pressure on existing accommodation facilities and contribute to the school’s long-term development while demonstrating the impact of public-private partnerships in advancing educational infrastructure in Ghana.
