The Ada Traditional Council has restrained Mr Ofotsu Amevor from presenting himself as the Divisional Chief (Wetsoyi) of the Ohuewem Clan after dismissing his legal challenge against the authority of Principal Stool Father, Mr Joshua Ofori Keku.
In a ruling delivered on April 15, 2026, the Judicial Committee of the Council upheld Mr Keku’s authority to install a divisional chief and to question the legitimacy of any title holder within the clan.
The three-member panel, chaired by Asafoatsengua Kotoko Debra V, rejected Mr Amevor’s motion, which argued that Mr Keku lacked the capacity to file an earlier case seeking his removal as divisional chief.
The committee ruled that, as Principal Stool Father of the Ohuewem Clan, Mr Keku had the customary authority to initiate such proceedings. It subsequently dismissed the application and ordered Mr Amevor to stop parading himself as the chief of the clan.
The dispute emerged after the death of Nene Amoakoto IV in 2023, which left the divisional stool vacant and triggered the process to select a successor.
Sources within the clan said the Gonyue and Amoako families of Kaja-Dornya and Tojeh, who traditionally nominate a successor, shortlisted four candidates and eventually selected Mr Solomon Ofoe Gonyue.
Mr Gonyue was then presented to family head Mr Emmanuel Kow Hlordzi, who approved his nomination after a vetting exercise by a six-member committee. He also reportedly directed that preparations begin for the burial of the late chief, in line with custom requiring a successor to oversee the funeral rites.
However, the process later became contentious when Mr Hlordzi allegedly installed Mr Amevor instead and presented him to the Ada Traditional Council on the same day as the late chief’s funeral.
Mr Keku subsequently petitioned the council to remove Mr Amevor from its records and replace him with Mr Solomon Ofoe Gonyue, arguing that the installation had not followed customary procedures.
Mr Amevor’s lawyers later challenged Mr Keku’s authority to bring the case, but that objection has now been rejected by the council.
