Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has cautioned the Attorney General against what he described as threats to prosecute opposition Members of Parliament over their criticism of government decisions.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 23, following the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, the Effutu MP warned that political power could change hands and that those currently in government could one day face similar scrutiny.
His remarks were directed at what he described as attempts to target members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority for their opposition to government policies and actions.
“You are threatening Members of Parliament with prosecution. Let me serve a warning to the Attorney General. Be careful. 2028, you will be in opposition,” he said.
Mr Afenyo-Markin urged government officials to consider the possibility of a future change in administration before using state institutions to pursue their political opponents.
He warned that members of the current government could themselves become subjects of investigations and prosecutions if the political balance shifted.
“If you are not careful, if you don’t stop now, you will go and meet Wontumi there, and Wontumi will be out, and you will go in,” he said.
The Minority Leader further suggested that future investigations into public procurement and other government decisions could expose officials currently in power to legal challenges.
He therefore urged the Attorney General and government officials to exercise restraint and avoid what he portrayed as the use of prosecution threats as a tool against political opponents.
