The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has successfully closed its largest-ever syndicated loan, raising US$2 billion equivalent through a three-year Dual Tranche Term Loan Facility. The milestone transaction underscores growing international confidence in the Bank’s financial stability and creditworthiness.
Completed on 9 March 2026, the facility comprised a US-dollar tranche of US$1.73 billion and a euro tranche of €228 million. Originally launched at US$1.5 billion, the deal attracted commitments totaling US$2.36 billion, allowing the Bank to scale final allocations to US$2 billion in line with its funding strategy.
Mr. Chandi Mwenebungu, Afreximbank’s Managing Director of Treasury and Markets, described the achievement as a “clear demonstration of global investors’ confidence in the Bank’s credit story” and a testament to its access to international markets even amid global financial volatility.
The loan will be used to refinance existing obligations and support Afreximbank’s operations, including initiatives aimed at boosting intra-African trade and economic integration.
The transaction brought together 31 lenders from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, highlighting the Bank’s expanding reach to diversified funding sources. The facility was coordinated by Mashreqbank PSC, MUFG Bank, Ltd., and Standard Chartered Bank, with Standard Chartered serving additionally as Documentation and Facility Agent.
This landmark syndicated facility positions Afreximbank to further its mandate of strengthening trade and investment across Africa while reinforcing investor trust in African financial institutions.
