Agona Abodom Breaks Away from Nyakrom Traditional Council Over Alleged Interference and Developmental Stagnation

In a bold and symbolic move aimed at restoring autonomy and advancing local development, the Chief of Agona Abodom, Nana Osam Dadzie Obrempong XI, and the Asona royal family have formally declared a breakaway from the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Council.

Addressing the press after his coronation at Abodom, the newly installed chief accused the Nyakrom Traditional Council of years of neglect, interference, and undermining of Abodom’s chieftaincy affairs since the passing of his predecessor, Nana Osam Dadzie X, over four decades ago.

“The interference has stifled our town’s development. Our roads are poor, education is declining, and critical projects have been abandoned. This break is necessary for the dignity of our stool and the progress of our people,” Nana Osam Dadzie declared, flanked by elders, the Queenmother, and supporters.

Conspicuously absent from the coronation were key traditional figures from Nyakrom, including Regent Nana Owiro XIV and Tufohene Nana Kusi Obrempong VI, further highlighting the strained relationship between the two traditional entities.

The Chief noted that consultations are underway with respected figures and regional authorities to determine whether Abodom should affiliate with another traditional council that prioritizes unity and inclusive development.

Beyond the political rift, the chief emphasized that the breakaway was also rooted in deep concern over the stalled community center project and the deteriorating quality of education in the town.

“We can no longer allow internal conflicts to paralyze our future. Abodom deserves better, and we are taking back control of our destiny,” he stressed.

In a rallying call, Nana Osam Dadzie announced that the 2025 Akwambo Festival would go ahead as planned and be used as a fundraising platform to reignite community development efforts. He appealed to all sons and daughters of Abodom, both home and abroad, to support the initiative.

Queenmother Nana Nyakoah Osam Obrempong XI reinforced the decision, stating that without a strong and independent leadership, the town’s future would remain uncertain.

“This is not rebellion—it is a step toward peace and self-determination,” she said. She also used the opportunity to urge young girls in the community to focus on education and personal development, warning against early pregnancies.

The declaration of autonomy marks a pivotal moment in the history of Agona Abodom, as the town seeks to reclaim its identity and drive its own development agenda outside the influence of Nyakrom’s traditional leadership.
