Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has begun efforts to rally the New Patriotic Party (NPP) around a message of unity and discipline as the race to elect the party’s next flagbearer heats up.
At a private breakfast meeting held at his Nima residence in Accra on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the former President met with all five presidential aspirants of the party, urging them to put the NPP’s collective interest above personal ambition.
A statement issued by his spokesperson, Fatimatu Abubakar, said the meeting sought to build camaraderie among the aspirants and reinforce the need for cohesion ahead of the January 31, 2026, presidential primaries — a contest expected to shape the party’s direction toward the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Akufo-Addo commended the aspirants for their commitment to the party and encouraged them to pursue issue-based campaigns devoid of insults and internal rivalry. “My focus remains on ensuring a united NPP and a credible primary process that will strengthen the party’s readiness for the 2028 polls,” he said.
The five aspirants — Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Ken Ohene Agyapong, Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former NPP General Secretary Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong — each pledged to conduct peaceful campaigns and support whoever emerges as the party’s flagbearer.
The meeting, attended by several senior party figures including Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Danquah Smith Buttey, Justin Kodua Frimpong, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, and Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, is being viewed within party circles as a crucial step toward averting potential divisions ahead of the primaries.
Political analysts say Akufo-Addo’s intervention signals a strategic attempt to preserve party stability and ensure a smooth transition of leadership after his tenure, particularly as the NPP positions itself for a comeback in the 2028 elections.
