Akwatia Member of Parliament Bernard Bediako Baidoo has questioned the consistency of calls for ministerial dismissals over the South Africa evacuation controversy, challenging critics to consider whether the same standard would have been applied to ministers under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
He argued that demands for political accountability should be guided by consistent principles rather than standards that may be applied selectively depending on which political party is in government.
Speaking on Good Morning Ghana, a programme on Metro TV hosted by Moro Awudu, Mr Bediako raised questions about the criteria being used to determine whether a controversy involving a minister warrants dismissal.
“If this were the standard for sacking a Minister, which Minister would have survived under Akufo-Addo?” he asked.
His comments come amid ongoing political debate over the handling of the South Africa evacuation saga and whether the concerns surrounding the matter should lead to consequences for the officials involved.
The Akwatia MP’s remarks shift attention to the broader question of how governments assess ministerial conduct and determine the appropriate response when controversies arise.
He questioned whether the calls for dismissals reflected a consistent approach to accountability, invoking the record of the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration as a point of comparison.
The debate over the evacuation controversy has consequently raised questions about the standards political parties apply when demanding sanctions against government officials, particularly when similar scrutiny is directed at administrations across the political divide.
