The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has called on residents of Accra to actively participate in the March edition of the National Sanitation Day, scheduled for Saturday, March 7, 2026, as part of activities marking the country’s 69th Independence celebrations.
The exercise, dubbed “Ghana@69 Clean-up,” will begin at 6:00 a.m. and continue until sanitation work across the city is completed.
According to a statement issued by the Assembly on Thursday, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve environmental cleanliness, promote public health and raise sanitation standards within the capital.
The clean-up campaign will target several strategic locations known for heavy human and commercial activities, including Agbogbloshie, the Accra Central Business District, Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie and Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
Officials say the sanitation exercise will involve multiple activities such as clearing and desilting choked drains, sweeping streets and alleyways, removing unauthorised posters and banners, and carrying out general clean-up operations in markets, lorry parks and other public spaces.
The Assembly explained that beyond improving the city’s appearance, the clean-up exercise is also aimed at preventing flooding by ensuring drainage systems remain free from waste and debris.
Authorities are encouraging residents, traders, transport operators and other stakeholders to fully support the initiative to help create a cleaner and healthier urban environment.
