Tensions flared at the Ashaiman main traffic light today as traders resisted a municipal task force’s attempt to remove them from roadside trading spots, sparking a standoff that disrupted traffic and drew large crowds.
The exercise, part of an ongoing enforcement campaign to clear unauthorised structures and restore free movement along the road, has been met with fierce opposition from traders who say the operation threatens their only source of income.
“We are not against order, but where should we go?” one visibly upset trader told reporters, insisting that authorities had failed to provide alternative trading spaces before the clampdown.
The confrontation brought commercial activity to a near standstill in the bustling transport hub, with security personnel deployed to prevent the situation from escalating.
Municipal officials have yet to issue a public statement, but residents say tensions could rise further if a compromise is not reached soon.
