The District Assembly has provided 600 dual desks to 40 basic schools, addressing a critical furniture shortage that has long hindered effective teaching and learning in the area.
The distribution, which took place during a brief ceremony at the District Assembly premises, is set to benefit schools such as Assin Odumasi D/A Basic School, Atobiase/Kyekyewere D/A Basic School, Assin Kyenaso D/A Basic School, and Assin Sibinso Catholic Basic School, among others.
District Chief Executive (DCE) Mr. Jonathan Birikorang, who led the presentation, emphasized that the desks are part of a broader strategy to create a more conducive learning environment for students. He explained that his routine visits to schools had revealed a significant shortage of desks, prompting the intervention.
“Education is the bedrock of economic progress, and for our children to succeed, we must first provide them with the basic tools for learning. These desks are just a small part of our commitment to improving educational outcomes in Assin South,” Mr. Birikorang said.
He also encouraged school authorities to prioritize the maintenance of the desks to ensure they serve students for many years, rather than ending up as scrap.
Adding his voice, Mr. Isaac Opoku Inkoom, the District Director of Education, urged school managers to instill a culture of care and responsibility among students, emphasizing the importance of preserving the furniture for future generations.
“Furniture is a long-term investment in our children’s education. It must be maintained and protected, not abandoned or sold off for scrap when damaged,” Mr. Inkoom advised.
The initiative reflects the District Assembly’s broader commitment to supporting education as a critical pillar of local development, reinforcing the belief that well-resourced schools are essential for building a brighter future.
