Manhyia South MP and lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has openly challenged EOCO Chief Executive Officer Raymond Archer to arrest him when he appears in court today.
The MP, who has been declared wanted by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), said he was not prepared to be intimidated and would proceed to court as planned.
Addressing the issue on Joy News’ PM Express on Wednesday, Baffour Awuah directly dared Archer to exercise the authority of his office if he believed the MP should be arrested.
“And so tomorrow I’m going to court. Raymond should arrest me. My brother, I am ready,” he said.
Baffour Awuah accused the EOCO boss of abusing state power, following the lawyer’s intervention in a case involving his client, Salomey Bafoo.
He maintained that his actions were driven by his duty as a lawyer to defend the rights of his client, whom he said was a poor and vulnerable woman whose fundamental human rights had been infringed upon by state actors.
The MP said his legal training required him to demonstrate courage when representing clients, arguing that people engage lawyers precisely because they may be unable to defend themselves.
“If a client can speak for him or herself, the client will never hire a lawyer. And so if you are a lawyer and you’re a coward, then you are not worth your training as a lawyer,” he said.
Baffour Awuah insisted that the threat of arrest would not prevent him from appearing before the court.
“My brother, I am going to court. I will never be intimidated,” he said.
His comments set up a direct confrontation between the MP and the EOCO leadership as he prepares to appear in court despite the wanted notice issued against him.
