Tensions have flared within the Bantama Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region following allegations of irregularities in the compilation of the constituency’s electoral album ahead of upcoming internal elections.
The dispute escalated into chaos at the constituency office, where rival supporters exchanged heated insults over disagreements about the voter register, forcing police from the Suntreso Command to intervene and restore order. The police later invited constituency chairman Fiifi Mensah and First Vice Chairman Kingsley Attah, popularly known as Wofa Attah, to assist with investigations.
At the centre of the controversy, Mr. Mensah has accused the Member of Parliament for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye, of influencing the electoral album process in favour of selected candidates.
According to him, the constituency had remained calm until concerns emerged that long-serving delegates had been removed from the register without explanation. He alleged that the MP set up a parallel arrangement to oversee the compilation process without involving him as chairman.
Mr. Mensah further claimed that delegates believed to support him had been deliberately deleted from the album, some of whom had reportedly served the party for over a decade.
He also questioned why he had been denied access to the final electoral register, while other executives were allegedly allowed to add new names to the list. He cited claims that while his proposed additions were rejected, others linked to rival factions were accepted.
According to him, an earlier consensus that no existing delegates would be removed from the register had been disregarded, deepening mistrust within the constituency.
Despite the tensions, Mr. Mensah insisted he remained committed to a fair and transparent process, stressing that he would accept any outcome if the elections were conducted properly.
He disclosed that he had reported the matter to the Ashanti Regional leadership of the party and was advised to file formal complaints to the appropriate structures. He added that, in the meantime, he had taken custody of all copies of the electoral album to prevent further alterations until the dispute is resolved.
Efforts to obtain a response from MP Francis Asenso-Boakye were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
