The government has appointed Benita Sena Okity-Duah, a former Member of Parliament for Ledzokuku, as the new Coordinator for the Free Senior High School (FSHS) Secretariat.
Okity-Duah, who has had an influential career spanning politics, fashion, and social development, is expected to oversee the implementation and coordination of the FSHS policy, ensuring its smooth operation across the country.
Born on June 19, 1976, in Anloga, Volta Region, Okity-Duah first gained national prominence when she won the Miss Ghana pageant in 1997 at just 20 years old.
She attended Achimota School for her secondary education before pursuing fashion studies at the London School of Fashion, where she spent four years mastering her craft. Upon returning to Ghana in 2003, she made a name for herself in the fashion industry before transitioning into politics.
Her political journey began when she secured the NDC ticket for Ledzokuku after defeating incumbent Nii Nortey Dua. She later won the parliamentary seat in 2012, making history as the first Miss Ghana titleholder to become an MP.
During her time in Parliament, she also served as the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children, and Social Protection from April 2013 to June 2014, playing a key role in advocating for women’s and children’s rights.
As the Coordinator for the FSHS Secretariat, Okity-Duah will be responsible for ensuring the effective implementation of the government’s flagship Free SHS policy, which aims to expand access to secondary education and improve educational standards.
Her experience in governance and policy implementation is expected to bring new momentum to the FSHS Secretariat, reinforcing the government’s commitment to making quality education accessible to all Ghanaian students.
