Former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has stepped up his campaign to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as National Chairman, promising to rebuild the party into a stronger electoral force ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Mr Agyarko received a boost to his bid after a group of NPP constituency chairpersons purchased and presented nomination forms to him to contest the National Chairperson position.
The gesture, led by former Ayawaso West Wuogon Member of Parliament Lydia Seyram Alhassan, was described by Mr Agyarko as a demonstration of confidence in his ability to help reposition the party following its defeat in the 2024 elections.
Speaking after receiving the forms, he expressed gratitude to the constituency chairpersons and other supporters for backing his candidature.
“I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Constituency Chairmen who purchased and picked this form for me and those who accompanied them. I’m truly humbled by this gesture. Chairmen, I’m truly grateful,” he said.
Mr Agyarko said the support had strengthened his resolve to contribute to the party’s rebuilding process.
He assured NPP supporters that the party remained capable of recovering from its electoral setback and returning to government in 2028.
“This party may have gone down, but we’re not out. With dedication and commitment…we will rise again,” he said.
At the centre of his campaign is a proposal to rebuild and rebrand the NPP’s structures and strengthen its capacity as an electoral organisation.
Mr Agyarko said, if elected National Chairman, his immediate responsibility would be to transform the party into a “solid electoral machine” capable of providing the necessary platform for its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to win the 2028 election.
“My task as a chairman is to lead in the rebuilding and rebranding of the party into a solid electoral machine upon which our flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, will stand firmly and win the 2028 election with ease,” he said.
The former minister is among several senior members of the NPP seeking leadership positions as the party reorganises its structures and prepares for its next national elections.
His nomination comes against the backdrop of growing calls within the party for reconciliation, organisational renewal and a stronger grassroots structure as the NPP seeks to regain power in 2028.
