The brutal killing of Mahamadu Seidu Akugri, District Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in Bongo, has sent shockwaves across the Upper East Region and intensified growing concerns over rising insecurity in northern Ghana.
Mr. Akugri was reportedly ambushed on Monday evening, May 19, 2025, while returning home from Bolgatanga. According to reports by Bolgatanga-based A1 Radio, unknown assailants shot the health official before setting his vehicle — with his body inside — ablaze. The incident occurred between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m., along a remote stretch of road.
Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, the nature of the crime has left many residents and regional leaders deeply shaken.
Reacting to the news, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, condemned the murder in strong terms, calling it a “barbaric act” and a “heinous crime” that must not go unpunished.
“I hereby condemn, in no uncertain terms, the shooting, killing, and burning of the body of Mahamadu Seidu Akugri… My heartfelt condolences to the family of my late comrade,” Ayariga stated.
He called on law enforcement to move swiftly to investigate the incident and apprehend those responsible. Ayariga also appealed for calm and restraint, noting that the incident could further complicate regional peace efforts.
“I urge all to remain calm and focus on the ongoing efforts led by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku situation,” he added, alluding to the larger peace-building process aimed at resolving tensions in the Upper East.
The Ghana Police Service has yet to officially comment on the incident or identify any suspects, but sources indicate that a major investigation is underway. Security experts warn that such violent acts — especially against public officials — could undermine the region’s fragile stability.
The attack on Mr. Akugri has drawn nationwide concern, not only because of the gruesome method but also due to his position in the healthcare system — a sector seen as vital for community development and public trust.
As the investigation unfolds, the people of the Upper East Region anxiously await answers, while the broader public looks to the state for swift justice and enhanced security guarantees.
