A tragic road accident involving an Ayalolo bus at the COCOBOD area in Accra’s Central Business District has renewed concerns about road safety and vehicle maintenance in the capital.
The incident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, left one person feared dead and several others injured after the bus veered off the road and ploughed into traders on the pavement.
According to eyewitness accounts, the bus, with registration number GT 5493–17, allegedly suffered brake failure before losing control. In the process, it struck a sprinter bus (GR 2238–X) and a double-cabin pickup (GW 2377–Y), damaging both vehicles before mounting the pavement.
“The brake of the bus failed, forcing it to veer off the road towards the traders. A woman selling pawpaw was killed instantly,” eyewitness Nii Okine Aryee told the Ghana News Agency.
Other victims, some with severe injuries to their arms, were rushed to the Police Hospital near the Accra Regional Command for emergency treatment.
The crash has sparked fresh questions about vehicle safety standards and the state of public transport buses in the city, particularly within high-traffic areas such as the CBD where traders and pedestrians share narrow spaces with vehicles.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but road safety advocates say the incident underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of vehicle inspection and maintenance regimes, especially for commercial buses.
