China Backs Africa’s Push for Bigger Voice in Global Institutions

China has thrown its support behind calls for a more inclusive global governance system, with its Ambassador to Ghana, Cong Song, advocating reforms that would give African countries and other developing nations a greater role in shaping international decisions.

Ambassador Cong said the current global governance framework needed to evolve to reflect the changing political and economic realities of the world, arguing that institutions responsible for global peace, security, finance, trade and development must become more representative.

He made the remarks during an interaction with journalists participating in the 2026 Ghana-China Media Fellowship organised by the Africa-China Centre for Policy and Advisory (ACCPA) in Accra.

According to the Ambassador, many international institutions were established under conditions that no longer represent the realities of today’s global community, making reforms necessary to ensure broader participation and fairness.

He stressed that global affairs should be guided by principles of sovereign equality, multilateralism and respect for international law, noting that all countries, regardless of their economic size or political influence, deserved an equal opportunity to contribute to international decision-making.

Ambassador Cong said China’s Global Governance Initiative was aimed at promoting a more balanced international system based on consultation, cooperation and shared responsibility among nations.

He described Africa’s demand for stronger representation in global institutions as legitimate, pointing to the continent’s increasing importance in global affairs and its pursuit of a stronger voice in organisations such as the United Nations Security Council and international financial institutions.

He said greater African participation would help ensure that international policies better addressed issues affecting the continent, including development financing, debt management, climate change, peace and security, technology transfer and reforms to the global financial architecture.

The Chinese envoy noted that a fairer governance system would not only benefit developing countries but also strengthen international cooperation and contribute to lasting peace and sustainable development.

The engagement formed part of discussions under the Ghana-China Media Fellowship, which provides journalists with insights into China’s perspectives on international cooperation and the evolving relationship between Ghana and China.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for African countries to strengthen regional coordination, develop common positions and build institutional capacity to improve their influence in global negotiations.

They also emphasised the role of the media in examining proposals for global governance reforms and assessing their practical impact on African economies and societies.

The ACCPA-led fellowship is designed to promote informed and balanced reporting on Ghana-China relations while deepening journalists’ understanding of issues shaping cooperation between Africa and China.
