The Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Tong Defa, has hailed the establishment of the Association of China (Ghana) Mining LBG (ACGM), emphasizing its potential to foster sustainable and inclusive development in Ghana’s mining sector.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony in Accra, Mr. Tong referred to the Association as a “bridge for win-win cooperation” between China and Ghana, underscoring its alignment with Ghana’s goal of modernizing its mining industry while protecting the country’s environmental heritage.
Mr. Tong highlighted the importance of balancing economic development with ecological preservation, stating, “Ghana’s lush forests and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver,” and urged ACGM members to prioritize sustainability in their operations.
The inauguration event, which was also attended by Ghana’s Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, marked the official launch of the Association, themed “Responsibility, Sustainability, Excellence, and Growth.” The ACGM, which comprises major Chinese mining firms and service companies, also introduced the China-Ghana Mining Community Development Foundation, dedicated to mobilizing funds for sustainable community development initiatives.
In his remarks, Mr. Buah, speaking on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, described the establishment of the ACGM as a significant step in enhancing Ghana-China collaboration in the mining sector. He stressed that the creation of the Association would open new opportunities for mutual growth, technological advancements, and the promotion of sustainable mining practices.
The Minister reiterated the Government’s stance on illegal mining, calling “Galamsey” an act of “environmental terrorism and economic sabotage.” He challenged the ACGM to set an example by adhering to Ghanaian mining laws and supporting local community development.
During the event, Mr. Tang ZhenJiang, the Chairman of the ACGM, laid out the Association’s core focus areas, which include promoting standardised development, information sharing, technical cooperation, and environmental protection. He expressed the Association’s commitment to working closely with Ghana’s government to enhance youth empowerment and sustainable community-driven development in the mining sector.
Mr. Buah also highlighted the important role of Chinese technical expertise in areas like underground mining, low-grade ore development, and mining-related training, which he believes can elevate Ghana’s mining industry to international standards.
The event, marked by cultural performances from the Atitirew Cultural Troupe, was attended by several dignitaries, including Ministers, Parliamentarians, and renowned entrepreneur Mr. Ibrahim Mahama, founder of Engineers and Planners. The ceremony symbolized a renewed commitment to responsible mining and the long-term partnership between China and Ghana in the sector.
In closing, Mr. Tang expressed the Association’s intent to strengthen industry cooperation, promote innovation, and ensure the fulfillment of social responsibilities, stating that, together, Ghana and China would “write a remarkable new chapter” in their mining collaboration.
