The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has intensified calls for peace ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, urging party stakeholders and state institutions to ensure an incident-free process that safeguards Ghana’s democratic reputation.
Speaking at the commemoration of the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence in Accra, the General Secretary of the CCG, Rev. Dr. Cyril Fayose, appealed directly to NPP aspirants and delegates to conduct the internal contest without rancour or violence. He stressed that political competition must not be reduced to hostility, noting that leadership selection could be achieved through mutual respect and maturity. The Council also called on the Ghana Police Service, the Electoral Commission, and other security agencies to collaborate effectively to maintain law and order before, during, and after the primaries.
Rev. Dr. Fayose underscored the importance of a strong and peaceful opposition in a multiparty democracy, explaining that Ghana’s democratic credentials within the sub-region depend on tolerance and fairness across the political divide. He commended the NPP for introducing a peace pact among aspirants and urged all candidates to honour its provisions in the spirit of unity. According to him, sustained peace is especially critical at a time when the country’s economy is showing signs of recovery, warning that instability could easily undermine recent gains.
The event, held under the theme “Leveraging Peaceful Coexistence for National Development,” also highlighted Ghana’s long-standing interfaith harmony. The External Affairs Secretary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana, R.Y. Yusuf Quainoo, praised the cordial relationship between Christians and Muslims in the country, describing it as a key pillar of national stability. He urged the media and political actors to promote messages of unity, stressing that Ghana’s shared identity must rise above religious and political differences to preserve peace and foster development.
