Apostle Eric Nyamekye, Chairperson of the Church of Pentecost (COP), has emphasized the urgent need for a transformation in Ghanaian values as a foundation for sustainable national development. Speaking during a visit from the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving (NDPT) planning committee, Apostle Nyamekye highlighted that Ghana’s religious devotion must translate into integrity, honesty, and accountability for meaningful progress.
The NDPT, set for July 1, aims to unite Christians, Muslims, and other religious groups under the theme “Reflect, Reset, and Renew for National Prosperity.” Activities will be held simultaneously across Ghana’s 16 regions and 266 districts, including Christian prayers at the State House forecourt and Muslim prayers at the National Mosque.
Apostle Nyamekye observed that while Ghana is a deeply religious country, there remains a disconnect between faith and practice, noting that some devout worshippers are often involved in corruption. He stressed that true national progress requires a sincere change of heart alongside behavioral change.
The COP Chairperson also reflected on Ghana’s peaceful elections, noting the calm following the 2024 polls as a reason for collective thanksgiving. However, he warned that peace alone is insufficient without prosperity, urging Ghanaians to pray for the nation’s future and embrace values that foster growth and unity.
Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Chairperson of the NDPT committee, praised Ghana’s reputation as a stable democracy and a beacon of peace in West Africa despite political tensions. He recalled that President John Dramani Mahama views July 1 as a pivotal date not only marking independence from Britain in 1957 but also the country’s full transition to a republic in 1960.
Ankrah explained that the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving seeks to encourage citizens to dedicate the day to meditation and reflection, setting aside partisan divisions by wearing national or celebratory colors instead of political party attire.
The NDPT represents a significant opportunity for Ghanaians of all faiths to come together in gratitude, self-examination, and renewed commitment to the nation’s prosperity through shared values and unity.
