The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed a deadly ambush on a military escort convoy protecting civilians along the Bawku–Bolgatanga route in the Upper East Region, leaving three civilians dead and one injured.
According to a statement issued by the GAF and signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the incident occurred on Monday morning at Binduri when unknown gunmen opened fire on a convoy conveying about 140 civilians.
The convoy, which was under military protection due to ongoing insecurity in the area, was reportedly attacked multiple times during the movement.
The Armed Forces said escort troops quickly returned fire and managed to repel the attackers, killing seven of the assailants in the process.
During a follow-up operation, the military recovered a G3 automatic rifle, two magazines loaded with 20 rounds each, and 176 additional rounds of ammunition from a suspect who fled into a nearby mosque.
The statement added that 10 individuals have since been arrested and are assisting police and military investigators with ongoing inquiries into the incident.
The GAF cautioned the public against interfering with security operations and urged residents to cooperate fully with personnel deployed to restore calm in the area.
It also extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured civilian a speedy recovery.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents linked to the long-standing Bawku conflict, where tensions between Kusasi and Mamprusi groups have repeatedly triggered armed confrontations.
Security forces continue to maintain a heavy presence in the area, providing armed escorts for civilians on high-risk routes and enforcing curfews, joint patrols, and disarmament measures aimed at containing the violence.
