In a case that highlights the importance of community vigilance in protecting vulnerable children, a 36-year-old father from Adoteykope, a suburb of Aflao, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling and impregnating his 15-year-old daughter.
The Circuit Court at Tokor, presided over by Mr. Joseph Ofosu Behome, handed down the sentence after Kofitse Zigah, an electrician, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement. The sentence was delivered on May 5, 2025, during his second court appearance.
Community Advocacy and Timely Intervention
The case came to light thanks to the intervention of Miss Faustina Elikplim Korwu, the Assembly member for Avoeme West Electoral Area, who acted swiftly upon learning of the girl’s ordeal. On May 1, 2025, Miss Korwu led the victim to the Aflao Police Station to file a complaint, triggering a prompt investigation that led to Zigah’s arrest.
Miss Korwu, reflecting on the case, expressed relief at the swift delivery of justice, though she had hoped for a harsher sentence. “I am pleased that the matter was handled swiftly, though I expected a longer jail term given the circumstances,” she noted, adding that the judge might have considered the convict’s apparent ill health in his sentencing decision.
Disturbing Details of the Crime
According to Police Inspector Albert Kombor, who prosecuted the case, the abuse began in February 2025, when Zigah reportedly laced a non-alcoholic beverage with a sedative before assaulting his daughter. On another occasion, during the victim’s birthday on April 15, 2025, Zigah repeated the act under similar circumstances.
The victim later experienced symptoms of fatigue and headaches, which she reported to the convict, but her concerns were ignored. It was only when Miss Korwu encountered the girl by chance and inquired about her condition that the full extent of the abuse came to light.
Medical examination later confirmed that the victim was 15 weeks and 4 days pregnant, leading to the defilement charge against Zigah.
Legal Context and Future Protection
Under Ghana’s Criminal Code, 1960 (Act 29), defilement carries a minimum sentence of seven years and a maximum of 25 years. Zigah’s 10-year sentence, though within the legal range, has sparked conversations about the need for stronger deterrents and better support systems for victims of abuse.
Community leaders, including Miss Korwu, are now calling for increased awareness and proactive measures to prevent similar cases, emphasizing that the protection of children is a collective responsibility.
As this case demonstrates, timely intervention by community members can be critical in bringing perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety and well-being of the most vulnerable among us.
