In an inspiring display of corporate integrity and ethical leadership, EMB Ghana Limited, a wholly Ghanaian-owned company, has voluntarily returned an amount of GHS 252,424.25 that was mistakenly credited to its account earlier this year.
The company, led by its Chief Executive Officer, David Kojo Flika, instructed its bankers, GCB Bank Plc, to reverse the funds to their rightful source after receiving an unexpected SWIFT credit alert on January 12, 2024.
In a formal letter dated January 15, 2024, addressed to GCB Bank’s High Street Branch in Accra, Mr. Flika emphasized that the transaction was made in error and that the company had no entitlement to the funds.
“We wish to indicate that the payment made to us via SWIFT was in error. We write to humbly request the reversal of the same to the source of funds,” the letter read.
The move, described by many as a model example of ethical corporate conduct, comes at a time when concerns over financial impropriety and corporate irresponsibility have dominated public discourse.
Mr. Flika said the decision to return the money was grounded in EMB Ghana’s core values of honesty, transparency, and accountability, which form the foundation of its business operations.
“Our company operates by principles of integrity and discipline. The teachings of my church, The Apostolic Church, Ghana, my alma mater, Presbyterian University, Ghana, and my family upbringing have all shaped my conviction that honesty is non-negotiable,” he stated.
He urged students, professionals, contractors, and business leaders across the country to uphold similar standards of ethical behavior, noting that public trust in corporate institutions can only be sustained through acts of transparency and responsibility.
“Integrity is not situational — it’s a lifestyle. I encourage others in both the private and public sectors to let moral values guide their decisions,” Mr. Flika added.
The company copied its correspondence to the Ministry of Works and Housing and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, reaffirming its commitment to corporate accountability.
Though neither GCB Bank nor the Ministry of Works and Housing has issued a public comment on the matter, the gesture by EMB Ghana Ltd has been widely praised as a rare and commendable example of ethical corporate citizenship in Ghana’s business environment.
Founded as a project contracting and compliance consulting firm, EMB Ghana Ltd continues to position itself as a model for responsible business practices and good governance in the private sector.
