The Toase District Court has struck out the assault case involving a teacher and a student of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School after encouraging both parties to pursue an amicable settlement outside the courtroom.
The case attracted widespread public attention following the circulation of a viral video showing a physical confrontation between a teacher, Eric Afful, and a female student on the school campus.
The footage, which sparked intense public criticism on social media, captured the teacher repeatedly hitting the student before lifting and throwing her to the ground. The incident subsequently led to Mr. Afful’s arrest and legal proceedings.
When the matter came before the court, the presiding judge advised the parties and their respective families to explore reconciliation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in the interest of restoring harmony.
Following the court’s decision to strike out the case, stakeholders called for restraint as efforts continue to resolve the matter peacefully.
Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Professor Elvis Binney, appealed to the public and civil society organisations to avoid making comments that could prejudice ongoing reconciliation efforts.
He also urged individuals to refrain from issuing threats against the teacher, stressing the need for calm and respect for due process.
The incident has generated national debate on discipline, student welfare and acceptable conduct within educational institutions, with many stakeholders calling for strengthened measures to prevent similar occurrences in schools.
While the legal proceedings have come to an end, the case continues to draw attention to the importance of conflict resolution, child protection and professional conduct within Ghana’s educational system.
