In a stunning upset that has captured the attention of educators and community leaders alike, Dansoman 2 Basic School, a public institution in the Ablekuma West Constituency, has claimed first place in a fiercely contested inter-schools Reading Quiz Competition — toppling long-standing private school champion, AlphaBeta International School.
This landmark victory marks the first time a public school in the area has dethroned AlphaBeta, a feat many believed was out of reach given the historic dominance of private schools in academic competitions.
The winning team, made up of Lawrence Andor, Nancy Avortrie, and Reginald Lamptey, rose to the occasion with a blend of skill, composure, and teamwork that left audiences and judges impressed. Their success signals a shift in the narrative around the capabilities of public schools in Ghana’s education landscape.
Much of the credit goes to the school’s leadership and coaching staff. Head Teacher Mr. Emmanuel Bachuri, together with teachers Ruth Yamoah and Jasmine Haygan, provided strategic guidance and rigorous preparation that proved crucial in securing the win.
The achievement has sparked widespread celebration within the Ablekuma West community. Member of Parliament Rev. Dr. Kweku Addo lauded the school’s success as a defining moment for public education in the constituency.
“This win is a powerful reminder that excellence is not reserved for the privileged. It’s a testament to what’s possible when public school students are given the right tools, mentorship, and belief,” Rev. Dr. Addo said.
The victory by Dansoman 2 Basic is being hailed not just as a win for the school, but as a breakthrough for public education advocacy — challenging long-held assumptions about the academic capabilities of students in the public sector.
