Over 20 hectares of cocoa farms at Aboduabo in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality were reportedly destroyed by the Forestry Commission, leaving several farmers injured and prompting widespread concern over the economic impact on the community.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from Mr. Bright Asamoah Brefo, Member of Parliament for the area, who described the destruction as a severe blow to the municipality’s economic backbone. “Cocoa farming sustains the livelihoods of thousands of residents. Any attack on these farms is an attack on the very survival of our community,” he said.
Mr. Brefo expressed solidarity with affected farmers and confirmed that he had engaged the Forestry Commission, Municipal Police, and the Regional Minister to investigate the incident and ensure accountability.
In response, Western North Regional Minister Wilbert Petty Brentum assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.
The incident has heightened fears among local farmers, many of whom depend solely on cocoa cultivation for income, raising urgent questions about safeguarding agricultural lands and protecting farmers’ welfare in the region.
