Marriage Certificate Confirms Yusif Yunusah and Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor’s Civil Union

Story By: Muhammed Faisal Mustapha/Felix Ernest Odamtten

As the saying goes, behind every successful man is a woman, and behind every successful woman, there is often a man whose presence, support and companionship help shape the journey. That saying appears to take on a new dimension in the political and personal journey of Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region. And at the centre of this story is Yusif Yunusah a name now connected to the MP through an officially documented civil marriage.

For years, public figures have often found themselves at the centre of intense public curiosity, with their professional achievements attracting attention while aspects of their personal lives remain largely private. In the case of Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, a marriage certificate has now provided documentary evidence of a significant chapter in her personal life.

The marriage certificate documents the union between Yusif Yunusah and Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, establishing an official record of their civil marriage under Ghana’s marriage laws.

According to the document, the two entered into marriage in Accra on December 30, 2022, under Ghana’s civil or ordinance marriage framework, and the union has since been blessed with a child. The date and location stated in the marriage certificate provide a clear and specific documentary reference to the union.

The significance of the document is that it moves the matter beyond speculation, social media discussions or unverified accounts. The certificate serves as an official record indicating that the two individuals were joined in a civil marriage.

For a public figure such as Hon. Okunor, whose political career places her constantly under public scrutiny, documentary evidence becomes particularly important when reporting on matters concerning her personal status. Responsible journalism requires that such information be grounded in verifiable records rather than rumours.

THE DOCUMENT SPEAKS FOR ITSELF

The certificate records December 30, 2022, as the date of the marriage, with Accra identified as the location associated with the union. The record therefore establishes a clear historical point in the relationship between Yunusah and Okunor.

The document also provides an important distinction between an officially recorded marriage and claims that may circulate through public conversations without supporting evidence. In this case, the existence of the certificate provides a documentary foundation for reporting the civil union.

But while the document confirms the marriage, it does not automatically establish claims about the couple’s private circumstances, conduct or personal affairs beyond what is recorded in the certificate. Those matters would require separate evidence and independent verification.

This distinction is critical in modern journalism, particularly in an era when information can spread rapidly online. A document may establish one fact, but responsible reporting must avoid turning that fact into assumptions that the evidence does not support.

A PUBLIC RECORD WITH A PRIVATE DIMENSION

The marriage of Yusif Yunusah and Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor therefore represents more than a name appearing on a piece of paper. It is a documented chapter in the life of a woman whose political journey has brought her into the national spotlight.

While Okunor continues to make her mark as the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, the marriage certificate places another important dimension of her life on an official record.

For Yunusah, his name appearing alongside that of the MP on the marriage certificate formally connects him to one of Ghana’s prominent political figures through a civil union dating back to December 2022.

The document, however, should be understood within its proper context. It confirms the existence of the marriage record, but any further claims about their relationship, political influence, personal decisions or activities should be supported by additional independently verifiable evidence.

INDEPENDENT VERIFICATION

Given the importance of documentary evidence in public-interest journalism, the original marriage certificate or an appropriate certified copy can be subjected to independent examination by reputable media professionals where necessary.

Such verification would allow qualified journalists to examine the relevant particulars and assess the authenticity and evidentiary value of the record.

Ultimately, the central fact emerging from the document remains straightforward: Yusif Yunusah and Hon. Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor are recorded as having entered into a civil marriage in Accra on December 30, 2022.

Their documented union adds another layer to the public understanding of Hon. Okunor’s life beyond Parliament and politics. For now, the marriage certificate remains the principal documentary evidence of the union, and any responsible account of the matter should remain anchored in what the official record actually establishes.
