The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service has urged men experiencing abuse in their homes to overcome stigma and seek support through the appropriate legal and counseling channels.
Speaking in Sunyani, the Bono Regional Coordinator of DOVVSU, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Beatrice Korsah, emphasized that the unit remains committed to providing justice and protection for all victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender, age, or social status.
She noted that while women and children constitute the majority of domestic violence victims, some men also endure physical, emotional and psychological abuse in their relationships and marriages.
According to DSP Korsah, many male victims often choose to suffer in silence due to societal perceptions, misconceptions and fear of ridicule, making them reluctant to report their experiences to authorities.
She encouraged men and husbands who find themselves in abusive situations to take advantage of DOVVSU’s services, assuring them that the unit is equipped to provide support, counseling and legal assistance where necessary.
DSP Korsah stressed that domestic violence should not be viewed as an issue affecting only women, but as a societal problem that can impact anyone irrespective of gender.
She also expressed concern over the increasing tendency of some couples to publicise their marital disputes through social media and traditional media platforms rather than seeking professional intervention.
According to her, such actions often complicate efforts to resolve conflicts and may worsen already fragile family relationships.
She urged spouses facing challenges in their marriages to seek assistance from DOVVSU and other relevant institutions, where trained professionals can offer mediation, counseling and guidance aimed at preserving healthy family relationships.
DSP Korsah reiterated that the unit remains accessible to all victims of domestic abuse and encouraged the public to report cases promptly to ensure that affected persons receive the protection and justice they deserve.
