Commercial drivers operating along the Nkawie–Seidi–Kobeng–Amanchia–Mpatuam stretch in the Ashanti Region have raised alarm over increasing armed robbery attacks linked to the deplorable condition of the road.
According to the drivers, criminals are taking advantage of damaged sections of the road where vehicles are forced to slow down or become stranded to attack motorists and passengers.
The drivers said the worsening insecurity, coupled with severe transportation difficulties, had made travelling along the route increasingly dangerous, especially during the night and early morning hours.
The road, which connects communities within the Atwima Nwabiagya South Municipality and the Amansie West District, has reportedly deteriorated over the years due to deep potholes, erosion, and poor drainage systems.
Commercial vehicle operators explained that journeys which previously took a short time now consume several hours because drivers are forced to navigate cautiously to avoid accidents and damage to vehicles.
They also lamented the rising cost of vehicle maintenance, fuel consumption, and spare parts caused by the poor nature of the road, saying the situation was reducing their daily income and increasing transport costs for passengers.
“When our vehicles slow down or get stuck on the bad portions of the road, armed robbers take advantage of the situation to attack drivers and passengers,” one driver stated.
The drivers are appealing to the Ministry of Roads and Highways, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, and the affected district assemblies to urgently rehabilitate the road.
Residents along the stretch have also expressed concern that the deteriorating road is affecting farming activities, trading, education, and access to healthcare services in the area.
