The Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) Ashanti West Region has completed a major infrastructure upgrade, building a new 11 kilovolt (kV) feeder line to bolster power delivery in Greater Kumasi. Valued at over GH¢2.7 million, the project stretches from the Afari Substation to Nkawie and was finalized within six months.
Featuring 92 new 11-meter poles, three 12-meter poles, and advanced equipment including 11kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) load isolators, the distribution line is designed to improve voltage stability, reduce system losses, and increase operational flexibility in the Nkawie enclave and surrounding communities.
Previously, customers in areas such as Bedabour, Gyankobaa, Mpasatia, Kwame Dwaah, Toase, and Wioso relied on the Agogo Primary Substation, which occasionally faced low voltage issues due to the long distance and heavy demand.
According to George Amoah, ECG’s Ashanti West Regional General Manager, the rapid infrastructural growth in Nkawie necessitated the upgrade to meet rising electricity demand and support socio-economic development. The new line will also ease the load on existing lines serving Agogo, Ntrensere, and Sepaase.
Mr. Amoah revealed that further projects, including a distribution line from Afari to Sepaase, are underway to continue improving power reliability across the region.
