The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has invested over GH¢3 million in the first quarter of the year to upgrade power infrastructure and improve supply reliability across 40 communities in the Accra West Region.
The investment, according to the Accra West Regional General Manager, Ms Sariel Etwire, forms part of ECG’s broader programme to reduce outages, enhance voltage stability, and improve customer satisfaction within its operational districts.
Speaking at a technical review meeting in Accra, she reaffirmed ECG’s commitment to delivering safe and reliable electricity to support national development and economic activity.
She explained that recurring transformer failures and system overloads were largely driven by illegal connections, vegetation encroachment, and vandalism, which continue to strain the distribution network.
Ms Etwire warned that overloaded transformers increase the risk of equipment burnout, leading to low voltage supply and intermittent power outages, especially during peak demand periods.
She urged communities to support ECG by reporting illegal connections and individuals tampering with infrastructure, stressing that public cooperation is critical to protecting the network.
Residents were also advised to report fallen power lines immediately, particularly during rainy conditions, and to seek ECG assistance in clearing trees near power installations to prevent hazards.
Several communities benefited from the upgrade programme, including Dunyo Township, DVLA Kuntunse, Amasaman Market, Sarpeiman, Pokrom, Ablekuma Joma, Gbawe, and Anyaa Market, among others across districts such as Nsawam, Amasaman, Bortianor, Dansoman, Achimota, and Ablekuma.
ECG says the interventions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure resilience and ensure more stable electricity supply across Greater Accra.
