The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Police Service to launch immediate investigations into a shooting incident at the Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi, describing the attack as a serious assault on the safety of Ghana’s educational institutions.
The directive follows an incident in which two armed men reportedly entered the school premises and fired indiscriminately, causing panic among pupils and teachers.
The school’s headmaster was also reportedly assaulted during the attack and sustained injuries.
In a statement, the Ministry strongly condemned the incident, stressing that schools must remain safe environments where children can learn without fear of violence or intimidation.
“The Ministry of Education unequivocally condemns the disturbing shooting incident that occurred at Zohe Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Primary School in Yendi, in the Northern Region,” the statement said.
The Ministry described schools as sacred places dedicated to teaching and learning, warning that the use of firearms and acts of violence on school campuses pose a significant threat to the welfare of students, teachers and the wider educational community.
“Schools are sacred spaces dedicated to teaching, learning, and the holistic development of children. Acts of violence, intimidation, and the use of firearms on school premises are unacceptable and constitute a grave threat to the safety and well-being of learners, teachers, and the entire educational community,” it added.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has instructed the Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
The Ministry also appealed to members of the public to respect the sanctity of school environments and refrain from actions that endanger the lives of pupils and education workers.
Expressing concern for those affected, the Ministry conveyed its support to the injured headmaster, school staff and pupils, wishing the headmaster a speedy recovery.
It further assured parents and guardians that it would continue working closely with security agencies to strengthen safety measures in schools across the country.
The Ministry also called on anyone with relevant information to assist the Police with investigations to help bring the perpetrators to justice.
