Maternal and child healthcare delivery in the Sunyani Municipality has received a major boost following the commissioning of a new Reproductive and Child Health and Family Planning Unit at the Sunyani Municipal Hospital by Enterprise Group PLC.
The facility, funded at a cost of GH¢2.4 million under the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, is expected to improve access to quality healthcare services for mothers, infants, and families in the region.
The newly constructed unit replaces a previously dilapidated maternity block that was demolished to make way for the modern facility. It is fully equipped with offices, a waiting area, standard washrooms, a child bathing space, and a cold room for vaccine storage, alongside essential medical equipment.
Designed to support improved maternal and child health outcomes, the facility will enhance services such as family planning, immunisation, nutrition, child health monitoring, and health promotion.
Speaking at the inauguration, Chief Finance Officer of Enterprise Group PLC, Mike Tyson, acknowledged progress made in Ghana’s healthcare sector but noted that challenges such as overcrowding, ageing infrastructure, and inadequate equipment still persist.
He emphasised that the intervention reflects the company’s commitment to improving community wellbeing, stressing that “every mother deserves safe and dignified childbirth, and every child deserves a strong start to life.”
He also urged hospital authorities to ensure proper maintenance of the facility and equipment to guarantee long-term benefits for patients.
Managing Director of Enterprise Properties, Kwadwo Nini Owusu, explained that the facility was constructed in line with Ghana Health Service standards and protocols, describing it as a strategic investment in public health infrastructure.
He said the project would significantly improve access to essential reproductive and child health services, particularly for vulnerable groups in the municipality.
Sunyani Municipal Director of Health, Richard Adinkrah-Kyeremeh, noted that the hospital, which has been in existence for nearly a century, continues to face infrastructure constraints despite rising healthcare demand.
He welcomed the new facility, saying it would strengthen service delivery and improve patient care, while pledging the commitment of health staff to maintain it.
The Paramount Chief of the Sunyani Traditional Area, Odeefour Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II, also commended the initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.
He urged community members and health workers to take ownership of the facility and ensure its proper upkeep for future generations.
