Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, -Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has launched a scathing attack on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, accusing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate of political opportunism and betrayal.
In a blistering statement, Dr. Boakye-Danquah challenged Bawumia’s recent attempt to distance himself from the NPP administration’s failures, which led to the party’s defeat in the December 7, 2024 elections.
Speaking during his Thank You Tour, Dr. Bawumia had blamed the party’s loss on the arrogance of power, failure to reshuffle government officials, skyrocketing cost of living, the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), and the unpopular Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) under the IMF bailout plan.
However, Dr. Boakye-Danquah was unimpressed, accusing Bawumia of rewriting history for political convenience.
“As Vice President, he had the platform to voice dissent or influence policy but chose silence, only to now play the victim when it suits his ambitions,” Boakye-Danquah fired back.
He particularly took issue with Bawumia’s silence over the DDEP, which triggered mass protests by pensioners and widespread financial distress.
“His attempt to disassociate from the pain caused by the DDEP reeks of opportunism and undermines the collective accountability the administration owed to Ghanaians,” he added.
Boakye-Danquah did not mince words, labeling Bawumia’s strategy as an act of disloyalty to President Akufo-Addo, especially after the surge in petrol prices and the crippling cost-of-living crisis that plagued Ghanaians right before the 2024 elections.
For critics like Boakye-Danquah, Bawumia’s post-defeat narrative is not a reflection of leadership but an evasion of responsibility — a move that could fracture the NPP’s unity even further as it struggles to rebuild.
