The family of the late Ga-Dangme Muslim Union (GAMU) Queen Mother, Lawrencia Naa Borley Ahmed, is calling for justice after she was tragically killed by a stray bullet during an enskinment ceremony at Nungua West on February 22, 2025.
According to eyewitness accounts, the GAMU was holding a traditional enskinment ceremony when one of the attendees fired live ammunition.
The bullet tragically struck Lawrencia Naa Borley Ahmed, who was the wife of the Zongo Chief. She was immediately rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Nungua community, as the deceased was highly respected and was preparing for her traditional initiation as Queen Mother when the tragic event occurred.
Family’s Call for Justice
Despite a visit from the Nungua Divisional Police Command to the bereaved family, they remain dissatisfied with the pace of investigations and are demanding swift action.
“We appreciate the visit from the police, but that alone is not enough. We want to see concrete action, thorough investigations, and the arrest of those responsible,” a family spokesperson stated.
The family has also called on traditional authorities, law enforcement agencies, and human rights organizations to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.
Police Investigation Underway
The Nungua Divisional Police Command has assured the public that investigations are ongoing. Authorities have reportedly taken statements from witnesses, and efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the individual who fired the shot.
A police source confirmed that they are looking into the legality of the firearm used and whether the act was intentional or accidental.
Community Outrage and Concerns
The tragic incident has sparked outrage among the Ga-Dangme and Zongo communities, with many questioning the use of live ammunition at traditional ceremonies.
Several community leaders have condemned the incident and called for stricter enforcement of laws regarding firearms at public gatherings.
“This is a tragic and avoidable loss. There must be accountability, and we must ensure that our traditional ceremonies remain peaceful and safe,” said a prominent chief from the Nungua Traditional Council.
Meanwhile, GAMU has yet to release an official statement on the incident.
The bereaved family is demanding justice for their late relative.
They insist that no stone should be left unturned in ensuring that Lawrencia Naa Borley Ahmed’s death does not go unpunished.
The community, security agencies, and traditional authorities are now under pressure to prevent such incidents in the future and to bring closure to the grieving family.
