A late-night collision on the Accra–Tema Motorway has claimed one life and left three others injured after a tipper truck and a fuel tanker were involved in a crash that triggered a major fire outbreak.
The incident occurred between Saka-Saka Park and Tanink on Monday night, according to a situation report from the Ghana National Fire Service.
The report said the crash involved a tipper truck loaded with timber and a fuel tanker carrying about 54,000 litres of fuel. The impact sparked a fire that engulfed the tanker and destroyed parts of both vehicles.
Emergency responders, including fire crews from Tema, Ashaiman, and the Tema Industrial Area, were quickly deployed after a distress call was received shortly before midnight. The fire was eventually brought under control after more than an hour of intense firefighting efforts.
Three injured victims were transported to the Tema General Hospital for treatment, while one person was confirmed dead. Parts of the deceased’s remains were recovered at the scene and handed over to police investigators.
Fire officers said the blaze destroyed several tyres on the tanker and resulted in an undetermined loss of fuel. Rescue teams also worked for hours to recover trapped materials and secure the wreckage.
The cause of the collision is currently under investigation.
