Fidelity Bank Ghana is reshaping its lending practices to align with climate adaptation goals, positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable finance in the country.
Mr. Atta Yeboah Gyan, Deputy Managing Director in charge of Operations and Support Functions, revealed the bank’s strategy during a panel discussion at the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Programme Partnership Forum, held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra under the theme: “Unlocking Growth through Climate Resilience and Private Sector Leadership.”
Highlighting the bank’s shift in focus, Mr. Gyan stated, “At Fidelity Bank Ghana, we consider climate adaptation a strategic imperative — not only as a risk management issue but also a value creation opportunity.”
The bank’s approach integrates climate risk into its core operations, backed by a comprehensive Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) aligned with International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance Standards and the Bank of Ghana’s Sustainable Banking Principles.
Fidelity Bank recently completed its first portfolio-level climate scenario analysis, covering both its Retail and Corporate & Investment Banking portfolios. This included an internal review of how climate-related disruptions could affect its branch network and ATM infrastructure. Insights from the analysis led to the development of climate risk heatmaps to guide long-term resilience planning.
Mr. Gyan said Fidelity’s initiatives are directly aligned with Ghana’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), reinforcing the bank’s commitment to supporting the country’s climate adaptation agenda.
Beyond internal risk assessments, Fidelity Bank is also channeling private capital into climate-resilient sectors. Mr. Gyan highlighted innovative financial products such as the Electric Vehicle (EV) Financing package and asset finance offerings for solar energy installations in schools and hospitals.
“These solutions reduce customers’ exposure to energy disruptions while promoting the adoption of green technology,” he noted.
Fidelity Bank’s strategy underscores the growing role of financial institutions in driving climate resilience through targeted lending and private sector leadership.
