Kwabena Frimpong, a labourer and gardener, has been sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Adenta Circuit Court after pleading guilty to stealing three outdoor air-condition units valued at GH¢12,000.
Frimpong, who worked for a retired lecturer in Amrahia, Accra, revealed to the court that desperate financial circumstances, including the needs of his pregnant wife, pushed him to commit the theft. He confessed to selling each unit for GH¢1,000 to a friend named Ebenezer, whose current whereabouts remain unknown.
The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Eric Ransford Abban, explained that Frimpong had been employed by the complainant for five years and stole the units in March while on duty before fleeing. Police later apprehended him at a construction site near Kotoka International Airport after he had been in hiding.
The presiding judge, Sarah Nyarkoa Nkansa, convicted Frimpong on his own plea and handed down the sentence, emphasizing the serious consequences of crime even under difficult circumstances.
This case highlights the complex challenges faced by many workers grappling with economic hardship, raising important questions about social support and crime prevention.
