A devastating fire has razed the top floor of a two-storey hostel at the Kwadaso SDA Nursing and Midwifery Training College, displacing over 150 students and destroying personal belongings worth thousands of cedis.
The fire, which broke out around 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, sent panic through the student body, but no injuries or fatalities were reported—thanks in part to the absence of many students who had traveled home for the Easter holidays.
Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene promptly and managed to contain the blaze before it reached the ground floor, averting what could have been a full-scale disaster. Their timely response drew praise from eyewitnesses and local authorities.
“We are grateful no lives were lost. It could have been worse if the students had all been present,” said a member of the school’s management team.
Despite the successful containment, students who occupied the upper floor have been left in distress, having lost essentials such as mattresses, laptops, academic materials, provisions, and clothing.
“Everything is gone. I just bought food and supplies before traveling. Now there’s nothing to come back to,” a distraught student shared via phone.
The school has initiated a temporary accommodation plan for the affected students while appeals for donations and relief support are expected in the coming days.
The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, as fire officers have begun an official investigation to determine what sparked the blaze.
Authorities are urging the public to remain calm as efforts are made to restore normalcy on campus.
