A potential power disaster in Obuasi was swiftly averted on Wednesday night after a fire broke out at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in the area. The incident, which occurred at approximately 9:12 p.m. on May 21, 2025, caused an immediate blackout in Obuasi and surrounding communities.
In a statement signed by Ms. Dzifa Bampoh, Manager of GRIDCo’s Corporate Communications Section, the company confirmed that its personnel quickly shut down power supply to affected areas as a safety measure. The fire was brought under control with critical support from the Anglogold Ashanti fire team, helping to prevent any escalation.
GRIDCo noted that while the flames were contained without any reported casualties, engineers are currently assessing the full extent of the damage to substation equipment. Power will only be restored once it is confirmed that it is safe to do so.
The company apologized for the inconvenience and assured the public that every effort is being made to restore electricity to the affected areas as soon as possible.
This incident highlights the vulnerability of key national infrastructure and the importance of rapid emergency response systems in maintaining power stability.
