Residents of Abura Dunkwa and nearby communities in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region have welcomed the return of a functional fire tender to the area, following its restoration by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The development is expected to significantly improve emergency response after years in which the Abura Dunkwa Fire Station operated without a working fire engine, limiting its ability to respond quickly to fire outbreaks.
District Fire Commander, Divisional Officer Grade I Winifred Bonney, confirmed in an interview with the Ghana News Agency that the vehicle had been out of service for several years, creating serious operational setbacks for personnel in the district.
She said the restoration represents a major improvement in the station’s readiness and restores its capacity to respond independently to emergencies within Abura Dunkwa and surrounding communities.
Despite the progress, she noted that the absence of fire hydrants remains a major challenge, urging government and relevant stakeholders to provide infrastructure support to strengthen fire-fighting operations in the area.
The renewed attention to fire safety comes in the wake of recent incidents, including a blaze on May 30 that destroyed the premises of Bohyeba FM at Nyankumasi Ahenkro in the Assin South District. Although no lives were lost, properties worth millions of cedis were damaged, with firefighters from Mankessim deployed to contain the fire.
The restoration of the Abura Dunkwa fire tender is being seen as a crucial step toward reducing reliance on distant stations during emergencies and improving safety in the district.
