Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service prevented a major disaster after containing a fire outbreak at the Berekum Cinema Hall in the Bono Region.
The fire, which reportedly started around 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2026, caused extensive damage to properties and important documents worth thousands of Ghana cedis.
Traders and residents in the area were thrown into panic because of the cinema hall’s close proximity to the Berekum branch of Ghana Commercial Bank.
However, the swift response of firefighters helped stop the blaze from spreading to nearby shops and other structures.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade Three Ishaku Mohammed of the Berekum Municipal Fire Command, who led the firefighting team, said the fire had already intensified by the time personnel arrived at the scene.
Despite the intensity of the blaze, he said firefighters managed to bring the situation under control and prevent further destruction.
He added that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the fire.
There were no casualties.
Some traders near the cinema hall told the Ghana News Agency that they first noticed smoke coming from the building before the fire intensified.
