The Forum for Natural Regeneration (FONAR) is urging policymakers and communities to give children a stronger voice in tackling environmental degradation, warning that Ghana’s natural resources are being depleted at an alarming rate.
Speaking at a School Kids Eco-Clubs Environmental Poster Drawing Exhibition and Awards Ceremony in Tongo, FONAR Executive Director Sumaila Seidu Saaka said the country’s shrinking natural resources pose serious risks to future generations.
He stressed that while development depends on the use of resources such as minerals, fertile lands, and timber, these resources are not unlimited and must be protected.
According to him, children—who will inherit the consequences of today’s environmental decisions—must be actively involved in shaping long-term solutions.
“In this era of climate crisis, children suffer the effects more deeply, and the climate crisis is also a child-rights issue,” he said.
The event, supported by Awaken Trees and Heidehof Stiftung, brought together educators, traditional leaders, students and stakeholders to promote environmental awareness through creative activities.
For the past two years, FONAR has worked with the Talensi District Assembly and the Ghana Education Service to introduce Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR) in schools.
The initiative has established eco-clubs in 10 basic schools, teaching students how to restore tree cover and protect the environment without planting new trees.
Mr Saaka said the poster competition, themed “Taking Care of Trees, Taking Care of Our Future,” was designed to amplify children’s voices and encourage them to educate their communities about conservation.
Talensi District Chief Executive John Millim Nabwomya praised the initiative, saying children must be nurtured as environmental stewards.
He noted that the district is already seeing progress through the restoration of degraded areas such as the Yameriga Hills.
The event ended with awards for outstanding participants, with Master John Akolgo of Tongo-Beo Primary School winning the primary category and Master Bazamgia of Baapelug Junior High School emerging victorious in the JHS category.
