An aide to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has confirmed that he has successfully arranged the necessary sureties to facilitate the release of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, the embattled Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Chairman Wontumi was earlier granted bail set at GH¢50 million with two justifiable sureties—a condition that sparked widespread backlash from political circles and the public alike, with minority MPs in Parliament describing it as excessive and politically motivated.
The situation escalated to protests outside the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), where minority lawmakers staged sit-ins demanding his immediate release.
Meanwhile, Deputy Attorney General Dr. Justice Srem Sai revealed that Wontumi is under investigation for serious allegations, including fraud, money laundering, and links to international organised crime.
However, Wontumi’s legal team has vehemently denied the charges, labeling them as politically motivated attacks and violations of his rights. Lawyer Enoch Afoakwah criticized the Deputy AG’s statements as prejudicial, emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of the legal process.
Dr. Bawumia’s intervention signals a new chapter in the ongoing legal and political drama surrounding one of the NPP’s most prominent regional figures.
