Galamsey: Ghana Needs $300M To Restore Water Bodies

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has revealed that Ghana requires at least $300 million to restore water bodies severely polluted by illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The extensive damage caused by illegal mining has led to widespread contamination of freshwater sources, posing serious risks to public health and agriculture.

Professor Nana Ama Browne Klutse, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the EPA, highlighted these concerns while addressing a delegation from Knutsford University and the Climate Communications Network.

She emphasized that illegal mining continues to degrade Ghana’s forests and water resources, warning that urgent action is needed to reverse the damage.

“The level of pollution in our water bodies is alarming. Illegal mining activities have made several rivers unsafe for drinking and farming. It will take substantial financial resources and coordinated efforts to restore them,” she stated.

To address the crisis, Professor Klutse disclosed that the government plans to deploy water guards to protect river bodies from further pollution.

These trained personnel will monitor water sources, enforce environmental laws, and ensure that illegal mining activities do not continue to degrade vital water resources.

“Once we restore these water bodies, our goal is to ensure that communities can fetch clean water for domestic use without the risk of pollution from illegal activities,” she added.

Recognizing the need for public awareness, the Acting Registrar of Knutsford University, Mr. Frank Adjei-Ntekor, announced that the university is prepared to collaborate with the EPA in providing environmental training for journalists. The initiative aims to equip media professionals with the necessary knowledge to accurately report on environmental issues and educate the public on the importance of preserving natural resources.

Environmental advocates stress that restoring Ghana’s water bodies is not just a financial challenge but also a national responsibility requiring stricter regulations, community engagement, and long-term conservation strategies.

The EPA has assured the public that efforts will continue to combat illegal mining and safeguard the country’s water resources for future generations.
