GCB Bank PLC’s latest financial results point to a strong post-recovery performance, but management is cautioning that sustaining this momentum may prove challenging in the year ahead.
The bank posted a record Profit Before Tax of GHS3.17 billion for 2025, marking a 67.4 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The growth was largely driven by a surge in customer deposits and a rebound in lending activity as Ghana’s economy stabilised.
Customer deposits rose significantly to GHS41.3 billion, providing the liquidity needed to expand the bank’s loan book by 56.8 per cent to GHS16.39 billion. This expansion supported overall balance sheet growth and boosted revenue streams.
GCB also recorded substantial gains in non-interest income, with fees, commissions, and trading activities contributing a larger share of total revenue. This shift reflects the bank’s ongoing strategy to diversify income sources beyond traditional lending.
At the same time, improved risk management helped reduce the Non-Performing Loan ratio to 10.3 per cent, down from 15.1 per cent in 2024, while the cost of risk dropped sharply. The bank attributed this to stricter lending standards and better loan recovery efforts.
Despite the strong performance, GCB has signalled potential headwinds for 2026, particularly due to declining interest rates that could compress profit margins. Management indicated that maintaining growth will depend on continued strategic adjustments and operational efficiency.
The results also mark the first phase of the bank’s 2025–2028 strategy, which aims to reposition GCB as a more diversified financial institution with increased focus on wholesale, commercial, and transaction banking.
In addition to its financial performance, the bank rolled out several initiatives during the year, including sustainability programmes and leadership development schemes, as part of efforts to strengthen long-term resilience.
While the outlook remains cautiously optimistic, GCB Bank believes its current strategy and financial position provide a solid foundation to navigate future uncertainties and sustain growth.
