Ghana Armed Forces Takes Lead in Autism Support with New Special Needs Centre Initiative

The Ghana Armed Forces has stepped into a growing national gap in developmental healthcare by launching a Special Needs Centre project aimed at improving care and support for children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

The initiative, unveiled at Burma Camp as part of the 2026 World Autism Awareness Month, is expected to provide specialised services including therapy, education, and parental support—areas experts say remain largely inaccessible to many families in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Ato Brown described the project as a transformative step toward inclusion, noting that individuals on the autism spectrum possess valuable skills that can contribute meaningfully to sectors such as technology and national development if properly supported.

Health professionals at the launch highlighted critical challenges facing autism care in Ghana, including late diagnosis, limited awareness, and stigma. Erica Dickson noted that many children are diagnosed much later than in developed countries, often due to misconceptions and lack of early screening systems.

Sharing a personal perspective, Rosa Asiedu recounted the emotional and financial strain families endure while seeking care, stressing the urgent need for accessible and affordable services.

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Joshua Lartei Mensah-Larkai, said the centre would offer a structured environment for early intervention, including speech therapy, behavioural support, and psychological services, while also guiding caregivers.

Stakeholders at the event called for a shift from awareness to action, urging stronger collaboration among government agencies, health professionals, and communities to build a more inclusive society.

The project is expected to play a key role in improving early diagnosis, reducing stigma, and expanding support systems for children with autism and their families across the country.
