The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unveiled a historic prize money package totaling GHC9.5 million for the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season, aiming to elevate the league’s status and attract top talent from across Africa.
Speaking at the 31st Ordinary Congress held at the Ghana Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku revealed that the league winner will receive an unprecedented GHC2 million—the highest ever awarded in Ghanaian football history. The runner-up will also be rewarded handsomely with GHC1 million.
This new financial incentive scheme extends beyond the top two, with cash prizes allocated to the best 15 teams, reflecting the GFA’s commitment to enhancing competition and rewarding excellence at all levels. Notably, the third-placed team will pocket GHC800,000, while even the 15th-placed team is set to receive GHC200,000.
Mr. Okraku emphasized that this surge in investment marks a “new dawn” for Ghanaian football. “We are rewriting the story of the Ghana Premier League,” he said. “This is a game-changing moment aimed at raising the league’s profile to be among the best on the African continent.”
The enhanced prize structure is expected to encourage clubs to strengthen their squads and management, ultimately improving the quality of play and fan engagement. It also positions the GPL as a more attractive destination for top African players, who have traditionally sought opportunities abroad.
By injecting significant financial rewards into the domestic league, the GFA hopes to boost the overall development of Ghanaian football, from grassroots to the professional stage, while nurturing local talent and fostering a vibrant football culture.
As the new season approaches, stakeholders and fans alike are optimistic that the infusion of funds will ignite fierce competition and propel Ghana’s top-flight league to new heights.
