Ghana on Friday celebrated the towering contributions of five distinguished statesmen who helped shape the nation’s international reputation, while charging a new generation of envoys to carry forward a foreign policy vision rooted in economic diplomacy, African unity, and global advocacy.
At a dinner and awards ceremony closing the five-day Conference of Heads of Mission and Orientation Programme for newly appointed diplomats, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah praised the honourees as “true architects of Ghana’s respected global standing.”
The awardees—Dr. Obed Asamoah, Richard Maximillian Akwei, James Victor Gbeho, Chris Kpodo, and Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas—were lauded for their decades of service, from championing anti-colonialism at the UN to steering ECOWAS and advancing peace across Africa.
“Each of these giants has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s diplomacy. Their legacy is our compass, reminding us that diplomacy is about purpose, perseverance, and pride,” Mr. Debrah declared.
While celebrating the past, the evening also looked to the future. The new envoys were reminded of their central role in driving Ghana’s modern foreign policy agenda. Mr. Debrah outlined four priorities: deepening economic diplomacy, engaging the diaspora, championing climate justice, and modernizing the foreign service.
“Today’s diplomacy is no longer just about political dialogue,” he said. “It is about securing investments, creating jobs, and advancing sustainable development.”
The ceremony also attracted international voices of solidarity. Senegal’s Minister for African Integration and Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Yassine Fall, urged Ghana’s envoys to see Africa’s challenges as opportunities. “Your task is to build bridges—not only for Ghana but for our continent—transforming obstacles into stronger cooperation,” she advised.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa commended the new envoys for their dedication during what he described as one of the most rigorous training sessions in Ghana’s diplomatic history. He urged them to draw inspiration from the celebrated legends, maintaining Ghana’s tradition of excellence, fairness, and Pan-African leadership.
As the evening closed, the message was clear: Ghana’s diplomats are inheriting a proud tradition, but with a renewed mandate—to ensure that the benefits of diplomacy are felt in the everyday lives of Ghanaians through trade, investment, technology, and climate resilience.
